How do i apply this saying to American History?

One of my ideas could be that we should do reforms not by bloodshed and violence but by peaceful and diplomatic ways. This applies for all of us even today. The downside of that is that there are people who won't listen to us and just keep on their disgusting and dirty ways that would make us resort to the last resort: violence.
