Should i light a candle for my parents in private or publicly?

May they be remembered for good. I come from a large Christan family. Since the death of my parents I have lit a candle in private for them, since I did not want to offend members of my family. Is this defeating the mitzvah of the candle. My wife and children are jewish also.
