White Blood Cell Count Elevated?

Here is a brief history of my current dilemma - my husband, 34 yrs old, smoker, sent for a routine check up - white count came back 11.6 - they did a retest it came back 13.4, sent him to a hematologist - they ran it there came back 8.7 - we went back today for a follow up of the rest of his blood work which came back all normal - she wanted a retest of the white count - and today it was 12.5. He had a clear chest x-ray. This dr is sending him for an ultrasound of his abdomen to make sure nothing is going on in that area and she wants to do a bone marrow biopsy. I am completely petrified that this is some time of blood cancer. We have a 2 year old baby that needs his daddy. Has anyone out there had similar experiences and if so what was the outcome? I am grasping for straws here.
